Glorious
by
Matthew Nixon
Shattered glass
Broken dreams my
People
Splattered blood left by scattered pieces of my
Brother
Piss-stained walls broken 40 oz. bottles wreaking the stench of America’s
Forgotten
Among shattered brokenness are remains of
Forsaken
Still all is not lost, you see
Soul is found at bottle’s bottom
Questions in empty bowls and
Answers in laced cigars
Escape travels from needles through veins
Protection, in molded, clapping steel applauding fiery hollows
Belonging found on infamous ghetto blocks
Melody is sirens of incarceration
And rhythm is bars of sliding doors
Clanking…
Lost roots of my people
Gone like the wind
The abyss of nothingness from which we derive
What does derive from nothing?
Nothing?
Can it be that we made something out of nothing and my people have
Arrived
Though often judged and
Misunderstood
Most exploited and anointed
Oppressed and Progressed
Forsaken and Breath-taking
Both bold and beautiful
We stand We are
Overcoming
Against society, against the world against all odds, against
You
You don’t understand, but you really could
If you only would
Take a closer look without your
Preconceptions
Which are
Misconceptions
See it for what it is and you will finally
See
Dedication and motivation
God, our only inspiration
Coming from nothing
Yet we are
We fought through ropes of death and chains of oppression
Survived the flames and burns and rains
Many, many rains
Yet we are
You envy our swag and ways we talk
Rhythm in our soul and our walk
My people
Turn tragedy into triumphs and hard times into stories and hymns
We rise like a phoenix from the
Grim
We rise above glares and comments and general contempt, its okay you can’t conceive the hell where we had to dwell and the insane amount of pain it takes to be here
Conquerors of obstacles
We learned your language, learned your books, learned your heroes, endure the hatred and ALL you took.
And you hate US?
We don’t understand how or why we can be hated, are we not the people you raped, bred, molded, and basically created?
Don’t hate on us we are fabulous
STAND UP, APPLAUD
No home no history
We came from nothing and yet we are
HERE
Black People

GLORIOUS
My name is Matthew Nixon. I am a Fairhaven student in the upside-down program. My concentration is human services and I am getting a minor in psychology. My goal is to help people in a therapeutic method and I hope to have my own practice one day. I am married with 3 children and I write about issues and adversities that I have faced that my children may one day have to face. I’ve lived through some very hard times, and I am very thankful for them. They have made me stronger. They have also given me an ability to see the silver lining in different situations. I always like to keep my writing easy to understand and very illustrating for the reader. I write this in hopes that it will touch someone and maybe some people will be able to relate. Thank you.
