Alverno College www.alverno.edu

Alverno College located in Milwaukee Wisconsin is a private, Catholic women’s college serving approximately 2000 students. Alverno is a leading college in the nation in outcomes assessment. The college offers many traditional liberal arts disciplines as well as professional programs in education, nursing and business.

What distinguishes Alverno from other American colleges and attracts attention from educators worldwide is its ability-based curriculum and assessment process, initiated in 1973.

The curriculum ensures that students acquire the knowledge traditionally associated with a baccalaureate degree and master eight complex abilities needed to apply that knowledge effectively throughout their lives: Communication, Analysis, Problem-Solving, Valuing in Decision Making, Social Interaction, Developing a Global Perspective, Effective Citizenship, and Aesthetic Engagement.

The performance assessment process measures not just what a student knows, but also how well she can apply the knowledge in a variety of situations and at progressively more sophisticated levels.

The outcomes that students are expected to demonstrate are integrated into the curriculum and developed by the learner.

Students receive extensive feedback from faculty on key performances and learn to become critical, independent self-evaluators.
