Berea College www.berea.edu
Founded in 1855 as the first interracial and co-educational college in the South, Berea College promotes understanding and kinship among all people, service to communities in Appalachia and beyond, and sustainable living practices which set an example of new ways to conserve our limited natural resources.
Berea College has earned renown for the excellence of its academic programs as well as for its unique labor program and strong focus on service to Appalachia. Our curriculum, grounded in the liberal arts, is complemented by the opportunity for students to major in many different professional and interdisciplinary programs as well as traditional liberal arts disciplines.
Berea offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in 28 fields. Our current student/faculty ratio is 10/1 so our classes are small and our faculty are accessible. Perhaps our most distinctive academic attribute is the extent to which students take responsibility for helping one another learn.
U.S. News and World Report named Berea College the best Comprehensive College for a Bachelor’s Degree in the South for 2006. This is the 11th time Berea College has earned a top ranking in the publication. In addition to the top spot for Comprehensive Colleges in the South, Berea
College was again among colleges and universities recognized nationally for
having outstanding programs in ‘Service-learning’ and ‘Internships/Co-ops.’
