The Evergreen State College www.evergreen.edu

The Evergreen State College
is located in Olympia, Washington. With slightly more than 4000 students (many transfer students and commuters), it is the largest of the CIEL schools. Evergreen is a public college offering a primarily undergraduate curriculum and three small graduate programs (a Master in Teaching, Master in Environmental Studies, and Master in Public Administration which also has a Master in Tribal Administration concentration).

Evergreen is based on the five principles: interdisciplinary learning, personal engagement, collaboration, connecting theory and practice, and learning across significant difference.  Narrative evaluations rather than grades and seminars and active learning are longstanding practices. Students enroll in interdisciplinary programs, rather than discrete courses, that last one or two terms or all year.

The college offers a variety of programs that take advantage of the rich resources of the Northwest such as marine studies, alternative agriculture, and natural history. Evergreen also had strong programs in the social sciences, the humanities, the arts, and the sciences. The college has numerous internship and study abroad opportunities. Evergreen offers the upper division of a Bachelor’s degree on six Indian reservations and also at a campus in Tacoma Washington that serves a large multicultural population. Evergreen also has a strong evening/weekend program, and six public service centers focusing on K-12 education reform, Labor Studies, Northwest Indian Policy research, Community-based learning, College and university reform, and Northwest Indian Arts and Culture.
