New College of Florida www.ncf.edu

New College of Florida is situated on Sarasota Bay, 50 miles south of Tampa, Florida. Student enrollment is 750, and the student/ faculty ratio is 10:1. New College offers serious students the opportunity to pursue rigorous academic study in an environment designed to promote deep thinking, free exchange of ideas, and highly individualized interaction with faculty.  New College is the honors college of the State of Florida, with a diverse student body from 40 states and 25 foreign countries.

There are no grades, all course evaluations are narrative, and each semester the student and their faculty advisor compose a contract describing the student’s academic activities and goals for the semester. 

New College places a strong emphasis on undergraduate research, and all students complete a senior thesis in their final year.  The academic year is composed of two 16-week semesters, and one 4-week independent study period in January.
