The Poet’s Tragedy

by Debra Blaacker

All it takes
To create art
Is pen and paper
With a misled heart.
Confusion is for the weary
And strength is for the brave
But art is for those who are more
And have something to say.
Put out for public understanding
And over-interpreted by teachers
It gradually loses its meaning
In the midst of existentialism.
Form and shape
Are not important.
Rhyme and allusions
Are mere illusions
All for what we have to say
Because the world cannot take it
Without beauty.

Debra Blaacker is a student at Berea College.
