A poem about Social Responsibility
by Brock Brewer
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Free markets can save the world,
With the help of a few.
People must first understand,
That we have to make a stand.
Say no to exploitation and corruption,
And instead put those efforts toward ending malnutrition.
Take all those big, creative, and brilliant business ideas,
The ones usually used to fill deep pockets,
And convert them into meaningful, proactive, impacting solutions,
That provide Africa with some light sockets.
There’s nothing wrong with having nice-sized profits,
But why keep it from the workers and the community,
You know, the place where you got it.
It’s not called giving away money
It’s Social Responsibility; What, something funny?
Using the words social and responsibility together,
Some people take those words lighter than a feather.
That is why it is time to change,
A time to look at our current situation and start to reframe.
Reframe the practices of simply giving money away,
Start creating ventures that will actually make things okay.
The first thing to remember when you are thinking about solutions,
Is to never say quit, because the world needs everyone’s contributions.
The world depends on people, as much as people depend on the world,
And it is time for us to make the right decisions, before the world is torn.
Need to work together as human beings,
because governments don’t carry any guilty feelings.
I’m not saying you have to do this,
But if you try just once to help someone,
You’ll find a new definition for bliss.
Just one last rhyme that has traveled through time
People ARE capable of making the world they wish to see,
A little remembrance for the wise man Ghandi.
Brock Brewer is a senior at Berea College. He says, "I wanted to be a millionaire working at a Fortune 500 company, but my thoughts changed as I gained a better perspective of the world. I wrote on social responsibility, because it is a concept that needs to be discussed. Instead of making decisions based on what we want, and disregarding stakeholders that are affected by our decisions, people (corporations and individuals alike) need to start making decisions that will actually make this world a better place- where trust, cooperation, peace, and love are above all when evaluating opportunities."
